The first leg with a transport mode, and the first that has to decide what a line between two points means.
A flight is drawn as a great circle β the actual shortest path over a sphere β which on a flattened projection looks like a curve rather than the straight line most maps draw. The straight version is not a simplification, it is wrong: it depicts a route no aircraft would take and understates the distance.
